dual diagnosis for women

Dual Diagnosis

A dual diagnosis is made by a medical professional when an individual is diagnosed with both drug alcohol addiction and another psychological or psychiatric disease. In such cases, it is possible that the drug alcohol addiction and the mental or emotional illness conspire to hinder an individual's acceptable and safe interaction with others--and themselves.

Providing Information on women's Dual Diagnosis recovery

Though both illnesses may work individually they also work together worsening the effects of one or both the diseases, causing a relapse of each. A dually diagnosed person is often very difficult to treat and can experience significant problems. In some cases, alcohol or drug use may mask psychiatric symptoms. If left untreated, drug alcohol addiction can contribute to a reoccurrence of psychiatric symptoms and an untreated psychiatric illness can contribute to an alcohol drug relapse. Dual diagnosis treatment centers can offer great help for women and men suffering from drug alcohol addiction and another disease.

Some of the effects of dual diagnosis include:

  • Family problems or problems in intimate relationships
  • Isolation and social withdrawal
  • Financial problems
  • Problems on the job or at school
  • Multiple admissions to alcohol drug rehabs due to relapse
  • Multiple admissions for psychiatric care
  • Increased need for health care services
  • Legal problems and possible incarceration
  • Homelessness

In cases of dual diagnosis, both illnesses must be treated at the same time. In the case of drug alcohol addiction, detox may necessary which can take a few days to several weeks depending on the drug abused. Done under medical supervision, in a drug alcohol addiction treatment center, drug alcohol detoxification is usually safe and effective; it is highly discouraged to try it alone due to the inherent dangers associated with unsupervised drufg alcohol detoxification.

Once finished with alcohol drug detox, an individual can enter an addiction treatment facility and begin addiction treatment for their dual diagnosis of drug alcohol addiction and the psychiatric or emotional disease. This either happens in individual or group sessions accompanied by teaching of coping skills, exercise, proper diet, and participation in a 12 step program such as Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous. In essence, once proper addiction treatment and care are introduced, an addict with a dual diagnosis can improve and eventually achieve addiction recovery.
