![]() How to Ruin Your Chance at Addiction RecoveryThere are a number of ways an addict can ruin their chances at drug alcohol addiction recovery and they include the following:1) Focusing on the discharge date. This is one of the best techniques around. As soon as you get used to the drug alcohol treatment center, start asking yourself how many days and hours you have left before it is time to leave. Use your one-on-one time to push for an early discharge date rather than to discuss your anger and loneliness. 2) Analyze, revise and improve the treatment program. This technique is definitely an ambitious one. You work to find fault with existing proven addiction treatment programs and show how only idiots could benefit from such nonsense (in your words). You will make helpful suggestions and revisions in the middle of group sessions. (This may put some focus on you, but by taking over the role of the group leader, you will avoid talking about your own behavior.) 3) Focus on the faults of the staff. This will distract the staff and get them off your case. Point out that there aren't enough of your kind of people on the staff. Say you are tired of groups and activities all day long. Claim that staff does not understand you. This should keep the staff busy and confuse your fellow patients as well. While the debate about the staff's qualifications rages, you can sit in a corner and plan your celebration when you get discharged: untreated and still an addict. 4) Concentrate on physical problems. You might even get to miss group. If you are forced to attend, you can complain throughout and play the martyr to the hilt. Other good ploys are to dwell on all the serious issues you left undone on the outside and have to get finished or else. Don't talk about your girl/boyfriend. Just spend most of your time thinking about them. This will keep your mind off of addiction treatment for sure. 5) This is the BIG one. Above all else, do not surrender. Do not surrender to the addiction treatment program or even your need to get help. Stick by what is familiar. Always focus on the fact that it is someone else's fault. Concentrate on the fact that you can make it alone, that you don't need help from anyone else. If you follow the above techniques to the letter and use your imagination to create a few more, you can be confident that you will remain untouched by dozens of professionals and many more caring friends. You can return to your home, family and relationships and clearly proclaim that you have tried drug alcohol addiction treatment and found it ineffective. The truth is, these techniques will only work to take the focus off of you and your problem BUT it just further prolongs your misery, your drug alcohol addiction treatment and the addiction recovery process.
