What is LSD?

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is a potent mood altering drug discovered in 1938 by Albert Hofmann, a chemist at the Sandoz pharmaceutical laboratory in Switzerland. Derived from lysergic acid originating from ergot, a fungus that grows on rye grass, LSD is an odorless, colorless hallucinogen that leaves a slight tart taste when administered through the mouth(acid)

Its structural resemblance to a certain chemical compound found in the human brain made it very useful in research studies on mental illness.Commonly referred to as acid, blotter, window pane, dots and mellow yellow. LSD is available in the form of tablets, capsules and liquid. It is then put on absorbent paper and subdivided into small squares, each one representing a single dose. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, LSD obtained from illicit sources consists of 20 to 80 micrograms of LSD per dosage or even much higher.

The effects of LSD

The effects of LSD are usually random and unpredictable because they remain highly dependent on the dose administered and external factors such as the mood of the individual taking it as well as their environment. Visible effects include dilated pupils, goose bumps, sweating, dry mouth, tremors and profuse perspiration.

Usually these effects set in about half an hour after its ingestion and last up to 12 hours. When taken in higher doses one may experience delusions and strange hallucinations. They may be unable to accurately perceive time and depth, sizes and shapes of objects may appear distorted.

Other physiological effects may include increase in body temperatures, rapid heart rate and high blood pressure. A loss of appetite and insomnia may also be experienced.

Many former LSD users experience acute anxiety and flashbackseven after they have long ceased ingesting the drug. A flashback occurs suddenly, often without warning and may occur within a few days or even a year after LSD use. Flashbacks usually occur in people who use hallucinogens recurringly or have underlying personality crises, though it may also happen in infrequent users.

Furthermore, LSD users may develop lifelong psychotic diseases, such as schizophrenia or severe depression. They may also be unable to make sensible judgments or decisions or recognize common dangers. This defect makes them easily susceptible to personal injury. Though not regarded as addictive as cocaine, heroin or methamphetamine, it is still possible for LSD users to develop a tolerance for the drug.

LSD addiction Treatment

A common term shared by LSD users is the word trip. This is simply a description of the feeling they get when they use LSD. Acute and unpleasant reactions are considered bad trips. During the periods of bad trips and flashbacks, it is recommended that LSD drug users seek professional help. .

Most users of LSD voluntarily decrease or stop using it over time, without seeking LSD addiction treatment. Given its unpredictability this is a particularly precarious practice.
