Am I an Addict?

This is sometimes a difficult question to ask or answer. Many addicts remain undiagnosed and untreated, in part because of the misconception surrounding the definition of a drug addict as someone who sits in a dark alley sticking needles into their arm.

Addiction transcends race, religion, gender, nationality, occupation, family, age and spans all walks of life. No one decides to become an addict; for many it starts with a simple prescription for pain relief; increasing tolerance for the substance, moving on to drug seeking behavior, and ending up in addiction. For others, youthful experimentation with substances progresses beyond recreational use to drug dependence. Very simply, an addict is a person whose life is controlled by drugs.

How to determine your addiction

Before consciously admitting that they have a problem, many addicts go through a prolonged stage of denial. They may even admit they have a problem but will not be able to face the fact that they are addicted. If you are an addict, or have an addict in your family, then some if not all of the questions below will ring true for you:

  • Do you think a lot about drugs?
  • Do you ever use alone?
  • Do you avoid people or places that do not approve of you using drugs?
  • Do you continue to use despite negative consequences?
  • Has your job or school performance ever suffered from the effects of your drug use?
  • Do you put the purchase of alcohol or drugs ahead of your financial responsibilities?
  • Have you ever manipulated or lied to a doctor to obtain prescription drugs?
  • Have you ever stolen drugs or stolen to obtain drugs?
  • Have you ever been arrested as a result of drinking alcohol or using drugs?
  • Have you ever tried to stop or control your alcohol or drug use?
  • Have you ever been in a jail, hospital, or drug rehabilitation center because of your using?
  • Have you ever felt defensive, guilty, or ashamed about your drinking alcohol or drug use?
  • Has alcohol or drug use affected your sexual relationships?

Admitting that you are an addict is always the first step to recovery so it is vital that the above questions be answered honestly. Addiction gives nothing yet takes away everything that is meaningful to an individual's well being. It is a disease and if not treated can prove fatal. Addiction treatment programs can help, we can help you find a drug alcohol rehab center.
