Silent Shame: Women and AddictionDrug Alcohol Addiction transcends gender but female addicts face singular challenges and may require somewhat specialized addiction treatment programs as compared to their male counterparts. Many women are mothers, spouses or primary caregivers as well as full-time employees or employers. The emotional, financial and societal effects on women who are alcohol drug addicts are directly counter to the expectations overwhelmingly placed on them. Female addicts often face financial challenges that hinder them from getting drug alcohol addiction treatment. Paying for a drug alcohol addiction treatment program on their own without adequate insurance or the financial aid of significant others can prove difficult. It gets worse for women with children because of the social stigma attached it. It is likely that a woman who is abusing drugs is in a relationship where use and abuse of drugs is practiced. Addiction to drugs alcohol in women is less noticeable in the early stages than in men and in turn women may abuse for far too long before seeking treatment. The effects of drug alcohol addiction in women tend to be worse than in men.Women who do access drug alcohol addiction treatment facilities tend to recover faster and boast higher success rates of recovery than male addicts. Despite the barriers facing female addicts, treatment professionals are better equipped to overcome them and now offer gender-based drug alcohol addiction treatment programs that better suit female addicts.
