Darvocet Side Effects

Darvocet is a narcotic an analgesic medication commonly prescribed as part of a treatment regimen to manage pain. Its chemical structure is similar to that of the synthetic narcotic methadone. Darvocet should always be taken as prescribed by a reputable physician and never shared with others or taken in doses exceeding those prescribed. Like other pain medications, Darvocet is highly addictive, psychologically and physically. The Clinical Pharmacology medical journal has stated that "Darvocet's most prominent effect may be its addictive quality".

People who have taken or are taking Darvocet have reported the following side effects:

  • dizziness, sedation, drowsiness
  • lightheadedness, headache, hallucination
  • minor visual disturbances
  • mood swings ranging from elation to depression
  • decreased appetite
  • decreased sex drive
  • decreased urination
  • sweating or itching
  • nausea or vomiting
  • kidney and liver problems
Darvocet should never be prescribed to people with a history of depression, suicidal thoughts or drug or alcohol addiction. Of course, it is up to the patient to tell the doctor that those things have occurred in his past or are ongoing; if the patient neglects to do so, it may be that he is trying to gain access to a prescription he can use or sell illegally. Other physical ailments the patient has experience that should be discussed with a doctor before taking Darvocet include:
  • kidney or liver disease
  • asthma
  • enlarged prostate
  • Addison's disease
  • Head injury
  • History of epileptic seizures
  • Gallbladder problems
  • Urinary retention

Antidepressants, antihistamines, sedatives used for insomnia, other pain medications, muscle relaxants, anxiety medications, and alcohol can cause a dangerous level of sedation or unconsciousness, and even prove fatal, when combined with Darvocet. If taking Darvocet, it should not be stopped suddenly, especially following long-term use or high doses. If you have been taking Darvocet continuously for five to seven days, discuss how you should stop the drug with your doctor.

Darvocet Addiction Treatment

If you or someone you know have become dependent on or addicted to Darvocet, you should immediately call your doctor. The next logical step would be checking into a medical detox program to safely withdraw from the drug, followed by admission to a drug and alcohol treatment center.
