Demerol is a narcotic with therapeutic and analgesic effects similar to those of morphine. It is used to relieve moderate to severe pain and its effects are felt 10-15 minutes after ingestion, lasting up to four hours.

Prescribed in pill and syrup forms, Demerol is mentally and physically addictive. Ongoing use of Demerol leads to tolerance and, potentially, dependence. Demerol should be taken only if prescribed by a physician and in its approved dosages. It should never be shared with others or sold illegally for profit. It is likely that people who seek to obtain a prescription by providing false information to a doctor are themselves addicted or seeking to obtain prescriptions to sell.

It has been reported people using or having used Demerol have experienced dizziness, lightheadedness, sedation, sweating, nausea and vomiting, euphoria and dysphoria.
