PCP

What is PCP

Typically appearing as a white crystal-like powder with a distinct bitter taste, PCP readily dissolves in alcohol or water and is also available in liquid, tablets, capsules or colored powders (after being mixed with dyes in the black market). The street names associated with it include "angel dust," "embalming fluid," "rocket fuel," "wack," "ozone," "super grass," and "killer weed," the latter two when it is blended with marijuana.

Developed in the 1950's, PCP was originally used as an intravenous anesthetic but discontinued in the mid 1960's after patients became adversely affected, appearing extremely aggressive, disturbed, delusional and irrational as its anesthetic effects wore off. It is now confined to legal veterinary use and is considered an illegal drug available only on the black market.

PCP is typically snorted, smoked, injected or swallowed whole. Following its ingestion it is common for PCP users to report experiencing numbness, slurred speech, loss of coordination, rapid and involuntary eye movements, auditory hallucinations, image distortion and short term memory loss. For some, PCP use may cause an acute anxiety or a feeling of impending doom. Still others experience increased paranoia, violent hostility and a distinct form of psychosis (schizophrenia).

Virtually all PCP obtained off the street is produced in clandestine, illegal laboratories in the United States; production appears more concentrated in Los Angeles.

PCP Addiction Treatment

After prolonged use, many PCP users tend to be extremely violent and often suicidal, posing a risk to themselves and those around them. It is common to find PCP users ending up in emergency rooms having suffered an overdose. PCP's disastrous psychological effects cannot be emphasized enough. It is a very dangerous drug and addicts should always be encouraged to seek professional help to cease use. Because of their propensity to hurt themselves, placing PCP addicts in a calm, controlled treatment setting is important, where it is ensured that they are constantly watched over and never left alone.
