Relapse Prevention

Relapse does not have to be a part of recovery, but often times it is.  Understanding and planning can minimize the destructive potential of a relapse.  Alcoholism is a disease prone to relapse, so the relapse pattern and the prevention mehods should be strategically planned. j0430489

A relapse prevention plan is an essential part of the addiciton treatment process. Everyone in the addicts life should be included in this plan as the relapse has an affect on everyone related to the addict or alcoholic.  A relapse can even be prevented by the people involved in the addict's life.  An effective relapse prevention plan should be completed in treatment and includes:

  • Relapse prevention education
  • Trigger/warning sign identification
  • Implementation of a recovery program
  • Foundation of a support group
  • Involvement of family and loved ones

There are warning signs and symptoms that you can recognize long before the first drink or use. Alcoholics and their families should use these warning signals to prevent a relapse.  Understanding the process and taking the necessary action can reduce the consequences associated with a relapse.
