What is a relapse? A relapse is when an addict or alcoholic returns to an addicitve lifestyle after being sober for a period of time and working a program of recovery.  Many recovering addicits and alcoholics relapse several times before they are able to maintain any substantial sobriety time. Thus, it is important to include relapse prevention techniques in the treatment process. It is necessary to understand the dynamics of a relapse before prevention can be successful. There is a difference between a lapse and a relapse. A lapse is simply a one time return to old addictive behavior, while a relapse is returning to an addictive lifestyle for a period of time. In most cases, relapse occurs long before the addict takes the first drink or drug. The addict diverts to their old attitudes and behaviors and then, the drink or use follows. A program of recovery enables a drug addict or alcoholic the necessary tools to undergo an entire change in their attitude and outlook on life. When a relapse occurs the addict goes back to their old addictive behaviors and lifestyle. If an addict does not implement a program of recovery they are considered "dry" and not "in recovery." When a person who is "dry" uses drugs or drinks they have not relapsed, because they didn't change their behaviors and attitudes.
